In the early days of software development, designing an application was mainly a technical endeavor. The goal of the design process was to set a foundation for actually building the application. As development became more complex, processes and methodologies to manage projects scaled as well. However, modern application development has brought a need for more holistic approaches to product development. The design of an application is no longer a mundane precursor to actually building a product: it is now a critical factor in determining if a product ever gets built at all. Spending more time designing an application in the early stages of a project can lead to cost savings at the end of the project. The challenge for managers now is not in designing an application, but how to measure the success of designs. Luckily, new tools exist to help them with this effort.
